Dental Exams

What to Expect During Your First Dental Exam

Your dentist will review your health history and chief complaints and then recommend appropriate films (x-rays) to allow us to see what your oral condition is. These films can show cavities (decay), cysts, tumors, infection in the tooth and bone loss. The position of the teeth is also looked at to make sure that this is not causing damage to other teeth in the mouth or if orthodontics or wisdom teeth removal is indicated or recommended.

An oral cancer screening and blood pressure measurements are done to check for other medical issues that might be present. Then our dentists will measure the periodontal pockets, which allows us to determine if there is any periodontal disease, bone loss, infection or possibly a crack or abscess with your tooth. Your dentist will check for cavities, cracks, broken or worn fillings and infection as well as evaluate your bite (occlusion) and any esthetic concerns you might have. You will receive oral hygiene instruction based on your needs.

Your options of treatment will be discussed with you. Not every patient needs or wants or can afford the same treatment. It is our goal to review with you your options, recommend treatment to remove disease and infection and then work with you to develop a treatment plan that works with your needs, desires and budget.
